Skills
- Mechanical and opto-mechanical design for precision space hardware and mechanisms.
- Expertise in mounting optical components (kinematic mounting, flexures, adhesive bonding).
- Experience designing with low-CTE and athermal materials (Invar, Titanium, ceramics).
- Proficiency in CAD and creation of industry-standard engineering drawings.
- Strong material selection, finishing, component sizing, tolerance and GD&T skills.
- Knowledge of contamination control, outgassing, FOD control, and venting methods.
- Hands-on fabrication, machining, sheet-metal, and 3D printing experience.
- Ability to integrate motors, controllers, sensors, and electronics into mechanical designs.
- Analytical, troubleshooting, and root-cause investigation capabilities.
- Familiarity with industry standards (e.g., ASME Y14.5).
- Eligible to obtain and maintain an active U.S. Secret security clearance.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop cutting-edge infrared and electro-optical sensors and opto-mechanical assemblies.
- Create high-precision space opto-mechanical structures, mechanisms, and electronics packaging.
- Develop and execute test plans to demonstrate proof-of-design and qualification.
- Own hardware across lifecycle: concept, analysis, prototyping, failure analysis, and production transition.
- Establish and manage system-level performance error budgets and top-level architecture trades.
- Build prototypes, analyze failures, and execute design iterations for manufacturability.
- Prepare formal documentation, analysis reports, and presentations for PDRs, CDRs, and TIMs.
- Support customer hardware demonstrations and collaborate with cross-functional teams.
- Mentor junior engineers, lead small teams, and manage project budgets and schedules.
Education
- Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) required; MS acceptable with relevant experience.
- Advanced degrees or continued technical training preferred for senior technical leadership roles.
- Eligible to obtain and maintain U.S. security clearance.
