The successful candidate will provide technical leadership, mentor team members, and collaborate closely with cross-functional teams.

Team Summary

This team is responsible for managing athenaCoordinator Core, a simplified electronic order transmission service that delivers clean, legible orders to labs, imaging centers, physical therapy groups, and other ancillary service providers. The system provides relevant clinical, billing, and demographic information directly on the order, making the referral process easier and more efficient. By developing and maintaining these essential systems, the team enhances healthcare communication efficiency and supports improved patient care coordination. The role involves working on cutting-edge healthcare technology that directly impacts the quality and timeliness of patient care.

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development, testing, and maintenance of software components within Athena Coordinator Core to support healthcare data integration and workflow automation.

  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to team members, fostering a culture of engineering excellence and continuous improvement.

  • Contribute to the architecture and design of major products, defining and documenting software architecture alternatives, and recommending preferred options.

  • Lead complex improvement initiatives, providing coaching and mentorship on agile project processes and best practices.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and implement solutions aligned with business needs and technical standards.

  • Apply software development lifecycle (SDLC) best practices and carry out process evaluation, diagnosis, and optimization for continuous improvement.

  • Build modular code that can be readily leveraged and maintained over time; monitor the team's accumulation of tech debt and ensure adequate payoff.

  • Lead code reviews and facilitate design reviews and walkthroughs to improve robustness, performance, security, and maintainability of the codebase.

  • Evaluate and ensure test automation across all team-owned code to validate functionality and catch integration issues before production.

  • Drive improvements to lower Time to Detect (TTD) and Time to Mitigate (TTM) for production incidents.

Leadership Responsibilities

  • Create a team environment where members contribute independently and effectively.

  • Hold self and team accountable for outcomes, including achieving goals and complying with policies and procedures.

  • Push others to achieve results while modeling a track record of success and ensuring cross-functional alignment.

  • Facilitate inclusive partnerships, behaviors, and working relationships among a diverse group of coworkers, stakeholders, and external partners.

  • Gain trust through a proven track record of consistency between words and actions; maintain honesty and authenticity.

  • Support team decisions, promote team spirit, and place team priorities above personal objectives.

  • Raise difficult issues and questions to ensure they are addressed; follow convictions in the face of adversity.

  • Share lessons learned from both successes and failures; create opportunities for self and others to try new things.

Additional Job Responsibilities

  • Explore and apply AI tools and AI-driven development practices to improve software productivity.

  • Gain familiarity with AI-integrated IDEs such as Windsurf, Copilot, or Codex.

  • Lead cloud platform operations and architecture using AWS services including EC2, S3, and Lambda.

  • Lead integration efforts involving healthcare standards to enhance interoperability.

  • Own documentation of software designs, processes, and user guides to facilitate knowledge sharing.

  • Monitor application performance and troubleshoot issues to ensure system reliability.

  • Participate in operational support activities such as on-call rotations, troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis of production issues.

  • Stay current with emerging technologies and industry trends relevant to healthcare software development.

  • Leverage prompt engineering techniques to effectively utilize Large Language Models (LLMs) for code generation, debugging, and documentation.

Expected Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, related field, or equivalent professional experience.

  • 8 to 10 years of experience as a software developer/engineer in a product development environment.

  • Proven track record of technical leadership and mentoring junior developers.

  • Strong software engineering skills with a focus on AI DLC and DevSecOps-driven delivery.

  • Proficiency in programming languages including Perl, Java, and Spring Boot.

  • Strong experience with front-end technologies including JavaScript and React.

  • Expert-level experience with object-oriented programming and relational databases such as PostgreSQL and Oracle.

  • Extensive experience with version control systems including Perforce and Git.

  • Strong knowledge of AWS cloud services and Infrastructure as Code tools like Terraform.

  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins and Harness.

  • Demonstrated experience leading Agile teams and driving continuous improvement.

  • Experience with HL7 protocols or healthcare integration is a plus.

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain design considerations and architecture decisions.
