SUMMER COLLEGE INTERN - Community Boards

Job Description

TASK FORCE: Intergovernmental Relations

UNIT: Community Boards

JOB TITLE: One (1) Summer Intern

CONTROL CODE: CBR Intern-26-01

SUMMARY:

The Mayor’s Office of Management and Budget (OMB) is the City government's chief financial agency. OMB's staff of analysts and experts assembles and oversees the Mayor’s expense and capital budgets, which fund the services and activities of approximately 90 City agencies and entities.

The Community Board Unit helps manage the City’s 59 Community Boards operating budgets by providing technical budget assistance, updating their spending plans after the release of each budget plan, and monitoring their personal service and other than personal service expenditures. We support the community boards’ involvement throughout all phases of the budget process. This includes holding various consultations between the community boards and city agencies, creating geographically based budget documents for capital and expense budgets, providing technical assistance through all phases of the post-Preliminary, Executive and Adopted

JOB DESCRIPTION:

June, July and August are the busiest months for the Community Board Unit. Before the close of the current fiscal year (June 30th), the team processes numerous budget modifications submitted by the boards to close out their spending for the fiscal year. At the start of the new fiscal year (July 1), the Unit prepares and distributes numerous budget documents for each board. The boards submit budget modifications to tweak their new budgets. The intern plays a critical role in managing the flow and completion of these projects.

Other tasks include completing the Bi-Weekly Personal Service Analysis, which helps monitor each board’s PS expenditures and providing boards with their Crystal Reports upon request.

The intern will gain a deep understanding of the various aspects involved in the community boards budget process, as well as the broader New York City budget process. Additionally, the intern will learn how the New York City Charter has been designed to enhance civic engagement in the budgeting process, specifically by:
- Learning how the Charter requires the Community Boards to consult with Agencies in making budget requests
- Learning how OMB has developed procedures to make consultations as effective as possible

So, any OMB Community Board intern leaves with a sound understanding of both theory and practice of civic engagement, and what it takes to make a genuine professional contribution through one’s work – a truly unique experience!

QUALIFICATIONS:

- Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Adobe Professional and Access Databases.
- Interest in the City’s neighborhoods and their issues.
- Candidate should be confident in communicating with the City’s 59 community boards and their staff.
- In addition, writing, research, and analytical skills are also essential.
- An avid interest in city government and the various neighborhoods is extremely important

REQUIREMENTS:

A cover letter is required to be considered for this position. Applications submitted without a cover letter will not be considered.

Undergraduate interns must be currently enrolled or accepted into an accredited college or university. Strong analytical, research and communications skills are required. Candidates must have familiarity in MS Word and Excel

To participate in the OMB Summer Internship Program, undergraduate students must be enrolled or accepted into a college or university.

Compensation/Duration:
