Skills
- Experience delivering spacecraft science payloads across multiple phases (formulation, build, test, integration, ops)
- Ability to translate scientific objectives into engineering requirements and trade decisions
- Familiarity with instrument constraints: mass, power, thermal, data rate, and radiation considerations
- Strong systems engineering and integration experience with environmental test campaigns
- Excellent written and verbal communication and stakeholder coordination skills
- Comfort making decisions under uncertainty and owning outcomes
Responsibilities
- Serve as the responsible engineer for one or more science instruments, owning technical and programmatic outcomes from build through operations
- Coordinate with instrument providers, test facilities, and spacecraft/integration teams to ensure timely delivery and compatibility
- Manage environmental testing, verification, and validation activities to demonstrate flight readiness
- Drive risk-based decisions, perform tradeoffs, and document rationale to balance science performance with system constraints
- Define and verify instrument requirements, interfaces (mechanical, electrical, thermal, data), and operational procedures
- Support commissioning, on-orbit operations, and science data acquisition including shift work and on-call availability during critical phases
- Communicate status, risks, and mitigations clearly to stakeholders across engineering, mission, and science teams
Education
- Master's degree in planetary science, engineering, physics, or a related technical discipline
- Demonstrated research experience in science (e.g., planetary science, astrophysics, or related fields)
- Practical experience working with spacecraft payload projects through multiple development phases
