Job details

Sr. CVD Equipment Engineer, Solar Cells (Starlink)

SpaceX's Starlink program is building and operating a massive satellite network and internal solar cell production to support satellites and space missions. We are seeking a Sr. CVD Equipment Engineer to own PECVD tool hardware for heterojunction silicon solar cell manufacturing—responsible for equipment availability, reliability, scaling, and continuous improvement to support very high-volume production.

Skills

  • Hands-on ownership of CVD/PECVD equipment in a high-volume manufacturing environment
  • Deep knowledge of vacuum systems, RF plasma systems, gas delivery, and temperature control
  • Experience with hazardous gas handling and safety protocols
  • Preventive/predictive maintenance, spare parts planning, and tool matching
  • Root cause analysis, failure analysis, and reliability engineering
  • Experience scaling equipment from pilot to high-volume production
  • Familiarity with statistical tools for SPC and reliability (e.g., JMP, Minitab)
  • Strong project and vendor management skills

Responsibilities

  • Own installation, qualification, maintenance, and continuous improvement of high-throughput PECVD equipment for heterojunction silicon solar cell manufacturing.
  • Drive equipment uptime, reliability, and tool-to-tool matching to support very large volume production with minimal downtime.
  • Run experiments and analyze data to improve capacity (UPH), reduce variation, and lower defect rates.
  • Develop and execute preventive and predictive maintenance strategies, spare parts programs, and tool matching protocols.
  • Lead root cause analysis and corrective actions for equipment issues including vacuum systems, RF generators, gas delivery, temperature control, and automation.
  • Partner with Process Engineering to implement process changes and support future equipment platforms.
  • Evaluate and select next-generation PECVD tools designed for 1GW+ per tool scale production and work with vendors on custom solutions.
  • Establish equipment performance metrics (OEE, MTBF, MTTR) and apply statistical process control for hardware stability.
  • Ensure compliance with cleanroom, safety, and high-reliability manufacturing standards; communicate factory equipment state to leadership.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or another STEM discipline (required)
  • Advanced degree (MS/PhD) in a related field (preferred)

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation and benefits package
  • Health, dental, and vision coverage
  • 401(k) or retirement benefits
  • Paid time off and holidays
  • Opportunities for professional development and technical growth
  • Ability to work on high-impact aerospace and space technologies
