Description of Work

You must apply by 11:59 PM prior to the posted closing date.The primary role of the Asphalt Design Engineer is to review and approve asphalt mix designs and oversee the NCDOT Asphalt Mix Design Certification Course. This position requires working closely with hot mix asphalt (HMA) contractors, NCDOT Pavement Specialists, and industry quality control personnel. The engineer will also handle mix design changes and updates, ensuring compliance with all NCDOT Standard Specifications and QMS Manual requirements. Additionally, the role involves managing the HMA Laboratory, overseeing the AASHTO re:Source HMA proficiency sampling program, and coordinating inspections by AASHTO re:Source auditors of the Bituminous Materials Laboratory.
This position collaborates with the Analytics and Accreditation Engineer to manage and improve the HMA laboratory’s Quality Management System. Responsibilities include conducting annual competency evaluations for laboratory technicians, maintaining training records, and developing training programs for new technicians and testing procedures, including AASHTO ballot items.
Reporting to the Bituminous Materials Engineer, the Asphalt Design Engineer will help develop and implement advanced performance testing for bituminous materials, including HMA mix designs, performance-graded binders, and asphalt emulsions. The role also involves collaborating with senior engineers and technicians to address performance issues related to production, placement, storage, and distribution of various HMA asphalt and bituminous products.
The successful applicant for this position should possess the ability to work with obnoxious odors and chemicals. Must have the ability to climb and walk on high structures; lift samples and equipment weighing up to 60lbs. Must be able to stand for long periods of time and be able to wear safety glasses and other personal protective equipment. This position requires occasional overnight travel therefore you must be able to operate a motor vehicle for various distances in the southeast United States.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences
Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC18 $63,927 - $111,871
Management prefers applicants with the following:
- Experience with the principles of Asphalt mix designs, asphalt binder and emulsion testing as they relate to asphalt and asphalt materials and math skills to perform calculations.
- Knowledge of engineering theories, techniques, practices, and procedures relating to multiple materials type testing administered by the Bituminous Materials Group.
- Experience coordinating and communicating effectively with other team members to achieve a common goal.
- Experience with personal computer skills including electronic mail, record keeping, routine database activity, word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, etc.
- Experience prioritizing tasks, managing multiple projects simultaneously, and organizing work effectively and efficiently with minimal supervision.

Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
