The Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) protects and promotes the safety and well-being of children and families through child welfare and juvenile justice services and community supports. ACS manages community-based supports and foster care services, and provides subsidized child care vouchers. ACS child protection staff respond to allegations of child maltreatment. In juvenile justice, ACS oversees detention, placement and programs for youth in the community.
ACS' Office of the First Deputy Commissioner (OFDC) plays a significant role in implementing agency goals and carries out ACS' mission to foster a collaborative, community-based, integrated approach to child and family safely, permanency and well-being. The First Deputy Commissioner serves as the Commissioner's senior delegate and represents the Commissioner when necessary. OFDC includes the Nicholas Scoppetta Children's Center (NSCC), Office of Public-Private Partnerships, Office of Equity Strategies, Office of Child and Family Health, Faith-based/HOPE Services, Medicaid Redesign Services, and Parent Advocacy Council. OFDC is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Operations Planning Graduate Intern to join our team.
The Operations Planning Graduate Intern will be assigned to support one of the following OFDC offices:
Hope Services-provide opportunities for incarcerated youth in two secure detention centers (Horizon Juvenile Center in the Bronx and Crossroads Juvenile Center in Brooklyn) to access spiritual and/or religious education and build their faith and hope during their time in detention.
Medicaid Strategies-aim to build staff capacity around knowledge and strategies to effectively leverage Medicaid to support youth and families as well as provide technical assistance to foster care agencies.
The Nicholas Scoppetta Children’s Center (NSCC) an ACS operated Congregate Care facility that functions as a “pre-placement” site serving over 3,000 children/youth annually.
The Office of Public-Private Partnerships (OPPP)-acts as ACS' liaison to manage and grow philanthropic, individual, and corporate donor relationships.
The Parent Advocacy Council (PAC)-created to bring parents’ voices into all aspects of ACS’ work to improve child and family outcomes.
As an Operations Planning Graduate Intern, you will support our OFDC team in day-to-day operations and contribute to long-term projects aimed at improving quality of care, employee engagement, and organizational effectiveness. This internship offers an excellent opportunity to gain exposure to various aspects of the agency including community engagement, public-private partnerships, voter registration, and efforts to supervise children a youth in ACS care. Additionally, as a member of the 2026, ACS Summer Internship Program cohort, you will participate in an enrichment program designed to fully engage students into the ACS and NYC government experience. Internship programming includes professional development workshops, lunch and learns, speaker events, NYC government tours, and networking opportunities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Shadow First Deputy Commissioner and senior leadership to learn about executive leadership and public administration.
- Co-lead planning process of summer Parent Day events in conjunction with the Parent Advocacy Council.
- Conduct outreach and develop partnerships to support agency priorities.
- Support one of the OFDC units (OPPP, PAC, NSCC, Hope, Medicaid) to support their summer programming activities.
- Organize and coordinate programming/activities for leadership staff in OFDC.
- Support the administration of policies and procedures in relation to OFDC areas, including the Children's Center, HOPE services, and others.
- Participate in training and implementation of voter registration drives.
- Participate in programming to support skills/wellness among youth supervised by ACS in care.
- Provide administrative support to the OFDC team as needed.
Learning Outcome:
- Gain comprehensive knowledge of ACS operations in a high-level setting.
- Develop project management skills and experience managing community relations and an understanding of policy compliance.
- Enhance abilities in coordinating and executing organizational tasks and events.
