About the Institutional Portfolio Management Department

Institutional Portfolio Management (IPM) sits within the CFO organization and drives strategic execution across the WGU system. The department manages portfolios of enterprise initiatives aligned to WGU’s strategic plan. IPM enables leaders to execute bold, system‑wide change by designing innovative business processes that improve productivity and scale, building enterprise capabilities in Agile Innovation and Portfolio Management, and identifying risks while driving cost efficiency and waste reduction.


About the Business Process Engineering Team

The Business Process Engineering (BPE) team is responsible for building and optimizing the processes that support WGU’s end‑to‑end operations. The team advances WGU’s business process maturity, creates clarity in complex systems, and designs scalable, future‑ready processes that support growth. Every BPE initiative is tied to improved student and employee experiences, operational efficiency, and enterprise-wide alignment.


Role Overview

The Manager of Business Process Engineering leads a team of Business Process Engineers and reports to the Vice President of Institutional Portfolio Management. This role is responsible for engineering new or re‑engineering existing processes to support WGU’s long‑term strategy and near‑term operational goals. The manager oversees process design, implementation, measurement, and continuous improvement across key portfolios while collaborating with stakeholders across the university. This is a high‑visibility role that engages in major transformation initiatives and requires strong leadership, executive communication, and technical process design expertise.


What You’ll Do

  • Lead and develop a team of process engineers, providing direction, coaching, and performance management to ensure high-quality execution.
  • Guide end‑to‑end analysis of existing business processes to identify inefficiencies, friction points, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to design, document, and implement future‑state processes and value chains that align with WGU’s strategic goals.
  • Use data analysis, Lean, and Six Sigma methodologies to uncover insights, support decision‑making, and drive continuous improvement.
  • Support organizational change management by collaborating with stakeholders and Change Managers to ensure effective adoption of new processes.

What You’ll Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline (industrial, service systems, mechanical, chemical, electrical, etc.).
  • 4 years of experience in business process engineering, management, or improvement roles, including 2 years of experience in service industries such as higher education, healthcare, or hospitality.

Bonus Points

  • Lean Six Sigma Black Belt or Master Black Belt certification.
  • Lean Silver or Gold certification (or willingness to obtain within 2–3 years).
